On a snow day from school I indulged in a marathon read to catch up (and re-read) some books by one of my favorite authors, Lindsay Buroker. She is decidedly my favorite fantasy/sci-fi/steampunk author and a new book was due to come out soon. What more incentive did I need?
Lindsay has two series The Emperor's Edge and Flash Gold. Both are highly readable very entertaining and available on my Kindle.
The Emperor's Edge saga is my favorite of the two for several reasons. I really like the characters and find all their adventures engaging. The setting also appeals to me, a world like ours in many ways although very different in others. The inclusion of magic practiced by people from some of the countries and denied and/or feared by others draws me into the story.
The final installment of this series was due in late spring so I felt it was my snowy day calling to be prepared. I read Beneath the Surface, Decrypted, Enigma, and Shadows Over Innocence all of which are quick reads, and prepared myself for reading the final volume as close to non-stop as possible. When Forged in Blood I arrived on my Kindle imagine my relief that at least one more Emperor's Edge book was yet to come. I am just not ready to end my relationship with these characters.
My one suggestion would be to not jump right in with Forged in Blood I. Take your time to read them in order and savor every moment. Although there are several titles in the series some are short stories or novellas and two of the books relate to The Emperor's Edge books and help to provide a background but and not specifically part of the series.
You might want to schedule a marathon of your own over a long weekend or a couple of short ones. The characters, amazing machines, magic and adventure will leave you wanting more. Sicarius and Amaranthe are characters I could really feel like I know as people.
Lindsay's books are available in digital formats from a variety of sources including Amazon, Smashwords, Kobo, Apple, and Barnes & Noble. Currently the first book, The Emperor's Edge and Shadows Over Innoccence are free downloads through a Kindle or Kindle App. One more reason to give Lindsay's books a try.

Catching Up...
This spring has been hectic in many areas which involves a lot of driving from my rural home. The good thing is that I have had a lot of reading time thanks to my Kindle's reading mode. I like that I can listen while driving then read to myself while my husband watches TV.
In the next few days there will be many posts--I have set them on a schedule, one a day, so that you won't have such a long list that you miss some of the great books I have been enjoying.

A Lindsay Buroker Marathon
Last week I suddenly realized that the fourth book in Lindsay Buroker's Emperor's Edge series would soon be out. All of my "have to" reads have been keeping me busy and I had not caught up with Lindsay for a while so I held my own "Buroker Marathon". Over a weekend I read the third Flash Gold book and the stand alone novel Encrypted.
Peacemaker, from the Flash Gold Chronicles, is an enjoyable book and a fairly quick read. Set in the Yukon the main characters are Kali and her friend/protector Cedar. Kali is a gifted inventor and mechanic. Much of her work is powered by flash gold which her late father created. Even small flakes of it are very powerful. When she met Cedar in the first book, Flash Gold, she first thought he was out to steal the flash gold but a friendship began and continues to grow.
Cedar's brother was killed by a villain, Cudgel, who continues to elude capture. While on his track, however, Cedar has been helpful in protecting Kali and stopping several other criminals. There is plenty of action in the Flash Gold books along with the steam powered vehicles and weapons that I enjoy so much.
Probably my favorite Buroker book so far, Encrypted takes place prior to the Emperor's Edge series but has one cross-over character, Sicarius. Getting to know more about Sicarius's past was a real treat since he is my favorite Buroker character. The other main characters, Tikaya and Rias are also very interesting and made me want to learn more about them and the ancient technology they discovered in some very old caves. My hope is that Buroker will return to Encrypted and create another series or that this plot will find its way into future Emperor's Edge books.

The Assassin's Curse by Lindsay Buroker
Although the next book in Lindsay Buroker's series The Emperor's Edge will not be out until sometime this spring she has a little treat for her fans. A short story The Assassin's Curse is now available to help us make it to spring.
The story features the two main characters in The Emperor's Edge books, Amaranthe and Sicarius. While training on an inlet they hear an explosion and discover an army steam tramper has been destroyed. When they see a male and female leaving the area in a boat carrying part of the tramper they follow. The couple flees to Darkcrest Isle, rumored to be haunted. Some amazing things happen on the island and we learn more about Sicarius in the process.
Although this story is short it is also packed with adventure and chilling moments. Lindsay mentions on her website that it was written over Halloween. The haunting spirit of that time of year shines through. If you love The Emperor's Edge books this is a must read. If you have not gotten around to trying them this story will stand alone; it would be a good introduction.

Catching Up
During the very busy month of December I hardly kept up with holiday prep and staying ahead of my readers with Christmas Stories. I did manage to read two short books in December and want to share one of them with you.
Hunted, book #2 of the Flash Gold Chronicles by Lindsay Buroker was excellent. I mentioned the first book, Flash Gold, earlier. Although I still prefer the heroine in the Emperor's Edge series by Buroker, I will read all of the Flash Gold books that she writes.
The Flash Gold books are set in the Yukon which gives them a slight twist from most steampunk. Kali McAlister is trying to get away from a variety of people trying to track her down. In book two she had decided to build an air ship that, with the help of the magical flash gold, will carry her away to a better and safer life. Part of the problem is that although her father created the flash gold Kali can only use it, not make more. If she is tracked down that information may very well get her killed. Cider, who came to her aid in the first volume, is still on hand but is trying to track down his brother's killer while keeping a protective eye on Kali.
The action is good, the machines are wonderful and the flash gold sounds like something we could all use a little bit of--as long as it was secret.
Digital copies of this are so inexpensive that there is no reason not to try a couple and judge for yourself. Visit Lindsay's web page and see what is upcoming. If you are a fledgling writer hoping to publish an ebook her site is a must.

Quick Update!
Last night I completed Deadly Games by Lindsay Buroker. As you know I love The Emperor's Edge books. This book was not an exception. Now, my question is how soon can I get book 4 into my hot little Kindle.
Earlier this weekend I had finished Flash Gold the first book in a series set in the Yukon during the 1890's from the Flash Gold Chronicles also by Buroker. I have the second book, Hunted, downloaded but have not started it yet.
Of the two series I like the Emperor's Edge the best, mainly because I really feel a link to Amaranthe, the main character. Don't ask me why, I have no idea.
Next on my reading list has to be Charlotte and Emily: A Novel of the Brontes by Jude Morgan. Book Club is coming up on December second, about two and a half weeks. With Thanksgiving at my house in-between I need to start tonight. It sounds like a good read and I will post once our group has had a chance to discuss it.

Found: A New Favorite Author
In my experimental, hap-hazard way of choosing books I have stumbled across a new favorite author. Basically if Amazon offers a book on Kindle for $1 or less and compares it to something else I have enjoyed, I'm hooked.
My most recent find is Lindsay Buroker whose web page is here. In the past week I have read everything in her high fantasy steampunk series The Emperor's Edge. Steam driven machinery and repeating crossbows are paired with a fantasy world that includes royalty and their foreign enemies who use magic.
The main character is Amaranthe who is an Enforcer, similar to a policewoman. In the first book, The Emperor's Edge she finds herself at cross purposes with the Emperor, Sespian, although her goal is to protect him. She soon finds herself hunted by government officials with a price on her head. She surrounds herself with unlikely companions and they lead a dangerous lifestyle in the hopes of saving the Emperor and clearing their names.
The second book is Dark Currents (Emperor's Edge 2) followed by a book of short stories Ice Cracker II and other Short Stories. The third book, Deadly Games (Emperor's Edge 3) is expected to be released later this month.
Buroker also has a series of steampunk novellas set in the Yukon called The Flash Gold Chronicles. Currently the first volume can be downloaded free onto your Kindle.
